Veggie Rocks

Here's a commission I'm currently working on, of some labels for a veggie garden. There's going to be 8 more including broccoli, broad beans, parsnips, cabbage, lettuce, potatoes, radish and runner beans. They all have their latin name on the back as can just be seen on the carrots rock in the picture. It's a fun project but difficult getting the lettering right, but I think the fact that they aren't all perfect gives them character, just like when you find that odd shaped vegetable that looks like a monster and it makes you smile. So here's too odd lettering and odd shaped veggies!

Volcano T-shirt

After the volcano eruption in Iceland a few weeks ago and all the following drama surrounding the shutting of UK and Europe airspace here's a little volcano t-shirt design. I thought the shut airspace was pretty cool, nature's way of saying she is still completely in charge and can do what she wants, when she likes and we're just along for the ride.
I modified a drawing of Mount Fuji that I did a while back just adding the ash clouds and magma chamber. It reminds me of my fave science and geography lessons learning about natural disasters and drawing diagrams with colouring pencils. You can also find it on redbubble.

The Year of Open Doors

These are my ideas and changing concepts for the Year of Open Doors Book Cover Competition. I had a hard time with it as can be seen from the 9 different things I came up with but eventually it clicked into something I was happy with and I submitted the last image. Funny the process of it now looking back on it, what determined my decisions? what influenced the outcome? did I really have control over it? how do you know when its's finished?

Anywasy it was for a collection of short stories from Cargo Publishing by all sorts of Scottish writers from the well established to the unpublished. The brief was about wanting to show a new revolution in writing, showing the different international voices of modern Scotland. I took inspiration from Russian Revolution/Constructivist posters and the Scottish flag. I thought up an idea of different heads all coming from the same globe and under 3 helmets (with the Scottish flag on) which have an open door at the top bursting open with lightning strikes of ideas.
