Friday Illustration: Nepal Earthquakes

 

2 weeks ago a hugely devastating 7.8 earthquake hit Nepal, thousands were killed, even more displaced, homeless and scared and now what happens this week, another earthquake at a scale of 7.3. The world is so cruel and unfair a lot of the time, but a natural disaster hitting a 3rd world country who are already struggling twice in as many weeks is so heartbreaking. Friday Illustration: Election

Staying up on election night waiting for the counts to be completed and the results to be announced is always pretty exciting, whatever happens it’s all history in the making. After voting day (though I voted a week ago by post!) you realise how every person has a voice and every vote counts. Here’s to a long night of results and maybe? waking up to a definite result.

Friday Illustration: Partial Solar Eclipse

 

I love a good celestial event, so make sure you dont miss the partial solar eclipse this morning when the moon will move (partially!) in front of the sun and can be seen across the North Atlantic. In the UK it will begin at 8.45am and with its peak at 9.30am and will finish about 10.40am. I remember the 1999 solar eclipse, we were in France and made a pinhole thing to see it with. Hopefully it's not too cloudy as the next partial one (to be seen from the UK) isn't until 2026 and the next total solar eclipse wont be until 2090, which I'm unlikely to be around for!

Friday Illustration: Baby Weighing

This week I've been having a spring clean sort out and came across lots of old National Geographic Magazine. They're full of inspiring images from around the world & universe and this Friday Illustration is based on one of them. A photo from Afghanistan of a baby being weighed; Afghan babies are kept tightly swaddled for their first year and tradition says that it helps with good posture.

Did you spot Comet Lovejoy this week?  It should be visible (under good conditions - storms go away!) for another 2 weeks & then it's not expected to be back for 8,000 years! Also is there another earth out there?!

Felix Baumgartner: Mission to the edge of space

Space, planets, stars, the cosmos it all fills me with such fascination, wonderment and makes the human race & our little earth so small and yet so precious.

So when I caught the live footage of Felix Baumgartner's highest ever skydive from 'the edge of space' I couldn't stop catching the amazing images from the patchwork fields to the inflating balloon, the first glimpse of space & the earth when he opened the door to the extreme free fall and relief of hearing those first words to reaffirm his survival on the way down; So I made a little gif to commemorate this special mission to the edge of space!

I absolutely can't believe the devastation and horrific events that have happenend in Japan since the 8.9 earthquake on Friday 11 March. Japan is such a beautiful country and needs all our thoughts and prayers at this sad and difficult time. If you can please donate!
